YOU - Find information to help you: balance, fun, and calendar hints. Tip like these: Tips To De-Clutter Your Living Room
Take stock – the first step in a de-cluttering project is to decide what needs to stay and what needs to go.
Give it away – if you have extra furniture or extra ‘stuff’ in the living room, get rid of it. Have a garage sale or give it away. Check with a women’s shelter to see if they need furniture. Many need furniture for their facility and some need furniture for the women that are starting over after an abusive situation. (if you are in the Dallas area, check with Genesis Women’s Shelter: www.genesisshelter.org)
A place for everything – decide where everything needs to go. This might mean purchasing baskets or shelves to find a place for things that need to be in the living room. Make sure whatever you buy fits into your décor so it doesn’t look out of place and feel ‘junky’.
Everything in it’s place – train your family to start putting things in their new places. This will be the most time-consuming (and possibly the most frustrating step) but it has to been done. If no one puts things up but you, it will soon become frustrating. The living room is everyone’s space, make them responsible for it too.
Clear it nightly – before each family member goes to bed, have them scan the living room for any thing they brought into the living room that day. Then have them take it back where it goes.
You might consider a lost and found bucket for items left in the living room that don’t belong there. Decide as a family, or husband and wife team, how you earn your items back. This may mean extra chores or something else.
KIDS - Find information to keep your kids organized: bags, closet, and toys. Tips like these Make School Mornings Easier
lay out clothes, or at least choose what to wear, the night before. If something needs to be ironed or a button needs to be repaired, you’ll have plenty of time to take care of it.
make a place for keys, shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes so you aren’t searching all over for them in the morning.
check backpacks and do homework as soon as you get home in the afternoon. This helps ensure that you don’t forget to do anything. It’s also easier for kids to do homework while they are still in school mode. For older kids who have a lot of homework, it might be easier to break homework into chunks: homework, break, homework, break…)
pack backpacks before bed. Return books and homework. Make sure you’ve signed and returned any necessary paperwork.
separate lunch items in the pantry so they aren’t prematurely eaten. Nothing leads to morning meltdowns quicker than no Yogos on Friday morning! Everyone at my house has their own plastic container in the pantry with their special lunch items. Leftover items are free game for after school snacks.
pack lunch (except for sandwiches and cold items) the night before. That way, if something special has disappeared, you have more time to get everyone settled on a replacement.

Ask about the staffing. How are they selected? How are they trained? What is the staff to child ratio?
Ask about an open door policy. If you can’t stop by unannounced and go into your child’s area, that is a HUGE red flag!
Check out the sanitation and safety of the facility. Where is the food prepared? Do the smoke alarms work? Do they have a disaster plan?
Philosophy is most important! How does the center foster learning? What is the daily schedule?
Check out the play area! Is there an age appropriate play area? Is there an indoor play area or plan for inclement weather?
