CALENDAR

Having a calender is the #1 essential tool to getting and staying organized!

Against convential wisdom, I have 2 calendars. One is a day to day "to do list" calendar. The other is a "big picture" calendar.

My day to day calendar is a write in calendar. The big picture calendare is electronic. They overlap in some areas like school vacations and appointments. I use my electronic calendar to keep track of when bills are due. I update it and print it every two weeks. I'm a gadget girl so I also sync it with my phone (the wonderful Samsung Blackjack) I love this feature because the phone displays my upcoming appointment on the screen. I catch a lot of 'forgotten' bills this way!

No matter how many gadgets I get, I HaVE to have a write in calendar. I HAVE to make a to do list everyday. It keeps me on track. There is just something theraputic about making a list and checking it off. It also serves as a good record, "I called on January 7 and ordered XYZ and it hasn't arrived." Since I'm a bit of a neat freak, I don't actually check things off or marke them out. I use a highlighter (another one of my fun items) - right now my highligher is purple.

I like ot get a lot of bang for my buck so I recommend a calendar that helps you meet other goals. This year, I wanted to do more Bible Study. So, I ordered Beth Moore's calendar, Whispers of Hope. It's undated so you can start anytime. Each week there is a devotional and a memory verse. And it's not too bulky.

Maybe you want to learn a language - get a "word a day" calendar

No matter what you get, get one and use it. Update it daily. Check your week and month every Sunday night. Consult other family members on Sunday night to make sure the week's activities are on the calendar. I like to have everyone's activities centerally located. We have fewer surprises that way.

Our family calendar is actually in my master bathroom. I check it each morning every morning while I'm drying my hair. My husband can check it while he shaves. It works better for us that by the back door. By the time I'm at the back door, I'm trying to get out of the house and I don't have time for adjustments.

Find a place in your house that works for you. It might not be the first place you try. Make sure you can see it daily. If you list your bills, you might not want your calendar in a public place. Keep moving it until it works. Make sure there is a pen or pencil handy to make adjustments.
